While we had our Thanksgiving dinner in Canada last week, our friends and family in USA will be having it in November – and I choose to send thank you gifts during Thanksgiving rather than Christmas because I think it is more meaningful. Thankful that they are our family and friends – and it’s so easy now – because I can get cookies delivered to your doorstep just with a few clicks of the mouse. Many years ago, I had to plan to send things way ahead of time and postage will cost me a bomb. But now that I can send cookies, fruit baskets, cakes and chocolate online for a very reasonable price – and no hassle – I do that every year – no excuse. Why? because i want to show my friends and family in the States that I am thinking of them and that I love them and am grateful for having them in my life. In fact, i’m sending out one to my boss in the States and in Spain.
So the kids are coming over for a sleepover to watch the new release of the Green Lantern this Friday – yes ! it comes out this coming Friday and it’s a good thing they have the Big Agnes Sleeping Bags with them for the sleepover – else we will need to get some. You see we weren’t expecting company – but the kid invited her cousins over for the Green Lantern movie. We had said no sleepovers for friends yet – but we didn’t specify no cousins too – her reasoning – so we quickly called the moms up – to see if they had sleeping bags that they could bring along for the sleepover. The kid is excited and already planning what to feed the cousins and the sitting arrangement for the sleepover and a movie.
The spouse normally have his iPhone in his back pocket and when he gets into his car and drive – it’s so inconvenient to get to it when he is driving or even when we are shopping. T’is’ just too funny !! Facebook earns more than you know it – with so many subscribers – and they don’t need to charge you and I for using facebook – we are doing them a favor by using it. You see all the paid ads – on the side of your facebook – at the right hand corner – well folks – those make more money for facebook than you can imagine – so yes! stop being STUPID!
The outlaws always reminds me that I’m no spring chicken no more – and truth be told I do not appreciate it when they say that. But i can’t really blame them since I’m a lot older than the spouse – I’m guessing they are worried that he needs to take care of me when I am older but little did they know that I’m looking into senior life insurance for myself – so that if anything should happen to me – I know that I won’t be a burden to my spouse and that our kid will be taken care of – and he will have the opportunity to quit what he is doing and look after our kid since she is still very young. I have to do that – because there is just no way – he can look after the store and the kid at the same time – and give her proper care – so yes! a good life insurance is necessary should anything happen to me while my kid is still young.
I was in the city a few days ago – and realized that there will be no big movie stores around here no more – folks like the Blockbusters and Movie Gallery are gone and had filed for bankruptcy. I wonder if they had been having the same problems like us as independent movie store owners who get ripped off by unscrupulous individual who rents our new movies and refused to return them? I have a list of collection agencies but because we are a small independent rental store – I doubt it is worth using a collection agency – even though our net loss for the last 12 years had been like $35K. Therefore, I bet big stores like the Blockbusters and Movie Gallery must have need for these collection agencies to get their money back right? so why the bankruptcy? maybe they didn’t find a good one then – but of course there is more to it than meet the eyes – but no matter what – it does make it a lot more difficult for ppl to rent now – unless there are more folks like us the independent movie store owners – now it is to find a collection agency that would take on small businesses like ours.
While the east celebrates a newborn in a different way - grandmothers celebrating your newborn are pretty similar here in the West. I remembered my mom buying for my nephew and nieces gold anklets with a bell on them - and here in the West – they also buy love lockets for their grandchildren as well. Well, most grandmothers or grandparents give jewelry – but not my kid’s grandparents – I think they are the practical type and don’t believed in giving jewelry? but my mother did send a piece of jewelry for my kid – so that was nice.So what did your parent’s in law give to your kids when they were born? pray tell – for it’s interesting to know. My girlfriend from Australia just had a baby girl and her mother-in-law gave her newborn a bracelet with a bell on it – it was the prettiest and cutest bracelet – I loved it so much. When I become a grandmother – I too would like to give jewelry to my grandkids and start them young.
Many of you may not know this – but some of us – needs to travel on a train for an hour to work and another hour back home. Reading on the Kindle is what some of you may do – but I catch up on my chinese shows and drama on Youtube – therefore, my acer laptop computers are the best investment I’ve made – for it’s small and easy to carry and I plugged in my earphones on the train – not disturbing anyone – and catch up on my favorite chinese tvb drama and the train ride doesn’t seems so long.
I can’t type when I’m on the train – so the only thing I do – is watch my dramas and tv shows – I think by doing that makes my train ride a bit more bearable. Some people who rides on the train with me – tells me – I get lost in my show – therefore, when I am done work – and going home – I rather not take the same train – as my co-workers – I rather go alone – and be left alone – instead of making some polite chat. I see many people doing the same thing as myself these days on the train – and am very happy that even on the train – I’m able to get wi-fi on them. So if you take long rides like I do – invest in an acer laptop – you won’t regret it – it fits perfectly into my Louis Vuitton Neverfull bag.
We attended the niece’s graduation party a few weeks ago and was happy that she loved her graduation gift – lucky for us – we had some graduation presents ideas from a good friend. Like all teenagers – they loved the electronics – the latest gadget would be good. So we took the advice of her parents and bought her an e-book. It was cheap too – at $199 and it was made bi-lingual – so pretty neat. We could have bought her an iPod Nano or a digital camera – but we chose the e-book because she is going to college in the fall – and I guess it would be a lot more useful for her lectures and school work. So if you are thinking of buying a gift for the nieces or nephews or even your own kids – or step – children – trust me – get some electronics – they will find it useful and they will loved you for it.
So someone asked me the other day – if I know where to find TVB dramas to watch on you tube – so that they can watch it on their laptops notebooks when they are on the train to work. You see – for some people – they take minutes to get to work – for others a hour or more on the bus or train – glad I don’t need to travel so far for work anymore – I used to when I was back home. I can understand that it gets so bored just sitting there and doing nothing and watch people or pretend that they are sleeping – so one way to kill time is to watch our favorite shows on you tube. Alas, I used to be able to find shows on you tube but these days its pretty hard - but not impossible I guess. But as for myself – I haven’t found any of late that I can share – but if anyone out there knows somewhere – that one can watch tvb movies on youtube – please share eh and yes – although I don’t watch my movies on a netbook – i watch them on my laptop all the time. Thank God for one of these inventions eh! what would life be without them?
Many people had asked me about video conferencing with me – and other fans of this page – just for a chit chat and also for talks about making money online. I would love to do it – if I had a megameeting web conferencing software that I read online – after all, no downloading and not expensive – definitely worth looking into I think. The Chinese have a saying ” who wants to be bald when they have hair right?” what it actually means is – who wants to go borrowing or asking for help with money when you don’t have to. Sure there are some people who just squander off their money/pay but there are many who genuinely needs help because they ran into some bad luck – like car broke at the same time the water pipe broke at home. Summer can be really hot here and if you want to work out in the gardens like we do – the best thing to put on are the nurses uniforms I kid you not! buy a scrub if you don’t have one yet – and you will be all set to do your gardening. Secret was told by my kid’s grandmother – she said that was the only thing that kept her cool in the summer. So nurses uniforms are not just for the hospital – but for ordinary people too. I think i like them so much because they are so roomy and they are so easy to wash and not expensive at all – plus if you want people to think that you work in the hospital – put on a scrub. I bought one for my kid too – and she loved it.
New releases for English movies comes out on every Tuesdays – and since we are a movie rental store – we have to print out copies of the cover for the new releases for the rental boxes that we send out with the customers – that way – they don’t return the wrong movies in the wrong case. We have a laserjet that uses laserjet ink cartridges that we use for printing the covers and been using it for years now – and we get our ink cartridges and toner for our fax machine from a place in the mall or we can order them online. We try to print covers for all our movies including the blu-ray ones and sometimes when someone sells us a game without the original box – we can use the laserjet to print out the cover as well. It does a pretty good job – and we are quite happy with it. At our store, we rent our movies for $3 for normal dvd and $4 for blu – ray disc - you can beat us for princes that’s for sure.
My grandmother used to say – you lived to learn and you learn something new everything – never be too proud to learn. I’ve always encouraged everyone I know to upgrade themselves whenever or wherever they can. I remember knowing a guy a long time ago – and he was happy just not doing anything in life but his job – i mean he had a good job and it paid well – but that was all he knew – he didn’t want to advance himself in anyway. When his company encouraged him to do an online business degree (they were paying for it) he refused to take up the option. How sad eh? if it were I – I would have jumped at the opportunity. There’s career advancement, there’s the different opportunities one can get after finishing an online degree – regardless what the major it is. So I can’t quite fathom why in the world people wouldn’t advance themselves?
I have girlfriends who are mothers and has full time job and they would definitely take the challenge – and do an online business degree if it was offered to them by their company or bosses. A little bit of ambition and a lot of discipline is all that is needed from a person – and if you want to climb the corporate ladder – or get that promotion – why not eh? Lived to learn! lived to learn! so i was thrown this question the other day – by a group of girlfriend – if I would do an online business degree? I would for sure – if they were offered by the people i worked for – that only means they have other plans for me in the near future – and if it was paid for – hey! why not ? i would jump at the offer for sure. And if my spouse and children loved me – they too would accommodate me – and give me time and help me complete my degree.
The town that I’m in used to be a fishing port – we have lots of fishermen out there – Nova Scotia is famous for its lobsters and scallops and as long as you are a fishermen – you are considered by the bank to a bankable. But like all fishermen – if you have never been out in the sea with them one day – you wouldn’t know the risk they are taking. In my 11 yrs after migrating – I’ve heard so much about fishermen losing their lives out there in the sea. Some get lost in the sea – some get drown and many other reasons dead – so if the fishermen are claiming unemployment during the off season – please don’t be-grudge them for it. I don’t know if they can claimed for Offshore Injury while working in this town like those in the oil rigs and seamen because the fishermen here have just a dangerous jobs as these oil riggers and drillers but I highly doubt so because I know of a fisherman who have had this head injury for years – he gets his migraine so bad – but he can’t do nothing about it – because he isn’t covered medically (from what I was told). So yes! fishing industry here may not be as vibrant but our fishermen still goes out despite horrendous weather with no insurance claimed – what an awful job eh.
I’ve often wonder if movie stars or those from tvb who needs money would have an easier time getting personal loans than us the ordinary people. After all they are famous right? surely the bank would know that they can afford to pay up their loans? I am guessing they have it easier than most people – what do you think? I also hear about veterans from TVB investing their money on properties – I wonder if they try and get a mortgage will it be easier for them than us? I bet that there are many advantages to be a movie star or a tvb one – even going into business with them would be a plus – since they are so famous – and I bet things would get done quicker and easier don’t you think? well, let me groom my kids to be movie stars now – hahahha! or if you need money – like an ordinary person – then you will have to go look for a place that gives out personal loans without much hassle or those that can repair your credit rating – it’s all about credit rating for the ordinary people – unlike the stars.
We have had some thunderstorm last week and it’s the middle of winter and you wouldn’t think that you will have a thunderstorm – but lucky for us – all our power supplies around the house – has got power surge protection. Unlike home in Asia – where we have lightning rods on top of our roof top – to attract the lightning to the rod – so it doesn’t burn your house down – here in our poor town – once you have lightning and thunder – your tv, computers even your phone lines can get fried. We’ve seen so many people coming into our store to get their computers and game consoles fixed after a thunderstorm – so if you have gotten your power supplies with a surge protector – it’s time to invest in one, these surge protectors saved us so much money.
We have been selling netbooks like hotcakes since they are like $150 a pop at our store – pretty good price eh. We can never keep them longer than a week – when they do get traded into our store. In the near future – we hope we can offer discount laptop computers as well – because they are at 50% off ! yes! it’s pretty awesome right? not many people can afford a very expensive laptop – but a netbook although great – is still not as good as a normal 15 inch screen laptop. Lets hope we can get some more discount laptops to pass the savings to our customers. We have a netbook for traveling purpose – and we loved it – so small, so convenient and so light weight.
Every Tuesday is movie shopping for us – at the store – because new movies for the week comes out on Tuesdays. Love the display at the movie shop because it does make it so easy for us to see what movies are new – the prices and very neat. We could use some of these point of purchase displays at our store too – for our previously used movies that we are selling at our store – sure makes it a lot neater – and easier for the customers to see the title of the movies that we are selling. I love shopping for movies – but the ones that are on sale is even better – so I figured if we had a display – right in front of the counter – maybe that would entice the customers at our store to buy more.
